A draft of guiding principles

We are looking for curious people interested in the ideas and serendipity that could emerge from a group of un-likeminds meeting, and being open to possibility.

It is a place for receiving more than transmitting, boldness, seemingly crazy projects, diversity in race, class and gender, difficult political discussions and community. It is a place to inspire action rather than committee meetings.

It is not a place for pea-cocking, name-dropping, bullshit, ego or having to be an expert, (not that that’s a bad thing, but non-experts can have cool ideas, not in their chosen field).

It will look to champion and support some of the quieter voices in society, amplifying ideas from people with different backgrounds and mental health challenges.

Where has this idea come from?

Back in 2006, two ad people in NYC wanted to meet up with people, with no agenda, apart from to meet other likeminds. Here’s a story in the New York Times:

They wanted to spread the gatherings, so I got together with Iain Tait, then founder of Poke, now ECD at Wieden + Kennedy, and we set up a Brighton Likemind. We ran it every third Friday of the month for 5 years and were joined by Matt Weston, Jenny Reiner and Emily Macaulay to host over those years.

Sometimes 5 people would show up, other times, 30. We weren’t bothered about numbers, we were more interested in quality and meeting new people who weren’t just coming to hand out business cards and sell whatever consultancy they were running.

It was always very low key, low on organisation, but, lots of things sprung out of it.

I've been missing the sparks of ideas that came from these chance encounters and am longing to connect with other good people in Brighton.
